We next find Samuel and Eliza at Domain Terrace, a charming precinct, overlooking the Outer Domain and across Farm Cove. The 2 rows of terrace houses were demolished in 1892 and it has now completely disappeared under the NSW State Library. Seen in Sheilds 1845 plan below, it appears almost as a continuation of Hunter Street across Macquarie Street, with a dog-leg to the south behind the buildings then housing the Legislative Council.
The Bennetts would have had a front seat at such events such as these during their residence in Domain Terrace.
We can place them at Domain Terrace at least from December 1844. The St. James Burial Register records it as being their address at the death of their son John (Bennett misspelt as “Bennet” in the Register.) And they are there when Rose is baptised in February 1845.
However, it is not clear how long they stayed at this address. At Kate Bennett’s baptism in February 1847, they are recorded as living in York Street and Samuel purchases the land for their next home in May 1848.
