1908-1910 - Disposal of the Mundarrah Estate
The new owners obviously held off trying to sell the estate until after the economy had recovered from the 1895 depression. The marketing took place between 1908 and 1919, with Rose ending up as the last Bennett descendant holding land on the estate. She finally sold her remaining interest in 1909.
The estate was initially marketed as 4 sub-divisions:
- The Little Coogee Beach Estate, Sections 1 & 2, (Lots 8 and 9 and Greville’s 20 ac.), and
- The Mundarrah Estate Sections 1 & 2 (Lots 4, 6 and 7)
Sales were initially slow, and were disrupted by resumptions for roads and the lack of public transport. However, as the tram network expanded, first to Randwick in 1881, then to Waverley and Coogee in 1883 and finally to Clovelly in 1913, sales and prices improved. Even after the initial sales, further resumptions by the State and Local Government for roads, public recreation and the tram line dramatically changed the original sub-divisions to ultimately produce the street layout we see today.
