1866 - John Campbell purchases and renames to ‘Aberburnie’
On taking possession, Campbell almost immediately applied to convert the property to Torrens Title and he renamed it Aberburnie (“the mouth of the brook” – Scottish). Like Dickson before him he used his ownership of the property as part security for a hefty mortgage of £5,000, in this case from the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. He appears to have made no substantial changes to the house itself, but to overcome problems accessing the property, came to an arrangement with Randwick Council to share the cost re-constructing the “Government Road” from Arden Street to the western boundary of the estate, which linked up with the tree lined avenue leading from the boundary to the house. (This later became Burnie Street, presumably referencing the name John Thompson had given to the estate.)
He lived there with his family until 1871, but he also experienced financial problems. He attempted to sell, but In October 1872 the CBC of Sydney exercised Power of Sale and sold to George Renwick of Redfern.
