1925 to present - The Clovelly Hotel

Walter Lumley was granted a Publicans Licence for “a premises proposed to be erected in Burnie-street, Clovelly” in June 1925 and tenders were let for construction just 1 month later. It would appear that plans for an hotel were well advanced and probably pre-dated the 1923 demolition.

The hotel was completed by March 1926 and tenders were sought for a 6 year lease. William Westphal was successful and the licence was transferred  to him in June 1926. Westphal, who had an interest in a number of hotels, ran into financial difficulties and only ran the Hotel until 1930. The licence afterwards changed hands on numerous occasions.

In 1955, Walter Lumley transferred the whole of the property in equal shares to his five sons and in 1967 they sold it to Imelda Small, the then licensee of the Hotel.

The “Cloe” in 2018

The most recent sale of the leasehold of the Hotel, in 2018, was by the Solotel Group (Matt Moran & Bruce Solomon).
